PROBLEM!
I did see the hiccup, and are we still under attack?
Somehow, I noticed that my entries are being edited by some outside source-hypertext ad links are being added to my posts!
What the...?
How do I stop this?

Nevermind-think it's just my laptop that's infected. I checked this site and my site on my home pc, and it shows up fine.
I have no idea what's going on.

Lovely Wife was infested with that once. It's a helper spyware thing that adds reference hyperlinks all over the place. Are they backlighted in yellow and have a wavy underline? Hers did - to differentiate them from real hyperlinks. Go for Adaware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy and you can get rid of it.

Its a very nifty* piece of spam that highlights keywords in web documents and makes them hyperlinks to commercial sites. AdAware should get it but you can also check your add remove programs list in control panel to see if you can nuke it that way.
*nifty in that it installs silently and is a pig to get rid of! As spam machines go that's about as good as you get

Ah....AdAware has saved the day and fixed my problem.
Thank you boys.

I think it attacks your browser rather than your ISP program or hard drive. I wrote a post about a week agao where "ad hominem" was underlined and highlighted as a link to an on-line dictionary. I'll presume that no one else can see it as a link because it only shows up as such when I look at my site in IE. When I'm on in Mozilla it doesn't show as a link.

Hatred
I made the super mistake of trying to find a haircut online. Somehow, now all of my Internet visits bring me a mass of pop-up ads asking if I want to remortgage my house, date a Russian mail order bride, or buy coffee.
None of which I want to do.
Is there a program I can download to stop this agony?
Thanks!

Ad-aware is one of them. It's free. There's another one too, but I can't remember the name right now.
Check with Stevie at CaughtintheXfire. She's gotten familiar with that software because something similar happened to her.

I am more interested in whether you found a way
to get a haircut over the internet. I really do hate making that 10 minute trip to the barbershop, sitting for 30 minutes awaiting my turn and then finding the whole actual cutting procedure took less than 3 minutes.

AdAware is great.
The program that will prevent this sort of thing happening, though, is
Mozilla.
And both are free!

In case anyone is interested -- because I don't LIKE Firefox (it doesn't render some of my favorite websites correctly) I use this program, in addition to AdAware Plus and
Spybot Search & Destroy (free):
Spyware Guard.

All of you were either busy at work or home asleep and so failed to notice that a nasty BGP hiccup took both of Liquidweb's* Class B's off the net entirely** for about three hours... Yesno?
Good.
And since they offer a 99.9% uptime SLA with a 100:1 penalty clause, I expect that my bill will be rather smaller than usual this month. In fact, that should just about pay for the t-shirts.

Quick Opera Question
Due to a recomendation of the fellow who's template serves as
Mrs. Frinklin's blog, I have begun weaning myself off of the evil IE and switching to Opera. It looks and works far better than IE did, except for one thing: On my MT Create New Entry page, IE displays a very nice little toolbar allowing me to Bold, Italicize, underline or post a link without going through the trouble of putting in the HTML myself. This is a good thing, since I'm a total newbie when it comes to HTML. This toolbar is nowhere to be seen with Opera. Is it possible to add it?

Thingys & Doodads - III
In this edition of
Thingys & Doodads we'll look at an expanding / collapsing comment script from the Scripty Goddess.
One way to make your site more reader-friendly is to provide a show/hide comments script. This script will show or "roll-down" your comments in the current window by clicking on a link displayed between your post text and your byline. Then you can click another link and hide or "roll-up" the comments.
I have modified the original Scripty Goddess code a little by inserting code to display a horizontal line between each comment. This makes separating and reading each somment a little easier.

Just looking at the code and what it does, I would try inserting the code to display excerpts after the </MTComments> tag. If that doesn't work, this is Scripty Goddess' code, so I would go ask her for assistance.

MuNuby Help - Background Images
Today's MuNuby Help lesson deals with background images.
You have already set the background-color property in your ID and Class divs. Now you may want to add a little "texture" or "personality" to your main page background.
Design gurus will tell you not to put text over an image as it will be difficult to read. I would make a few exceptions to that rule for my own personal purposes. One exception would be an image under the sidetitle text. Another design rule to keep in mind is "content is king". If you use tiled background images, make them subtle patterns and use complimentary colors so they don't overwhelm or distract from the content.
Now the process to insert background images.

Y'all have probably heard of the fundraiser for the Spirit of America by now, right? Don't worry, I'm saving the serious begging for my blog. Here I'm just promoting a fantastic offer from one of the Fighting Fusileers.
To help raise some cash without spending a penny just trackback to this post. The Pudgy Pundit will make a donation for every blog that pings it.

Help!
Hi Everyone. I'm new. You might have already visited my site and have seen that it's pretty bare. Well, that's because I want to get things resolved before moving my archives and stuff from Blogger. I have a few questions that are important to me at this time and I'm hoping you can help.
I would like my blockquote to appear in a box, not just indented.
I would like my expanded post to appear on the same page, instead of on a separate page like the permalink. I would also like the code to allow a collapse back to the original view.
I would like to use an unusual font for my banner title and description (DeVinne Orn). I entered it in the font family, but it's not working. Any clues how I can get that to work?
I want to set up additional pages for additional info I currently have parked on another site. Is that possible to do with keeping the current style sheet, and how? :)
When I upload pictures, where do I go to find them again? :)

blockquote--add this to the very end of your stylesheet and adjust color codes to your taste:
blockquote {
border: thin solid #400099;
background-color: #FFFCE6;
}

Hey, I'm almost completely moved in. I have my export file saved and need to import it into MT and then I'm pretty much ready to make the final leap. Woo Hoo.
Thanks for the help.
One thing though. I've tried to center the banner and it's not working. I'm doing that within the style sheet. Should I move over to the main index and use center html tags? I tried Googling centering in css, and the only thing I found was text-align: center. I did that and it didn't work. Clues?

In your Main Index template, go to
div id="banner" and add
align="center" "banner". That will center your banner image in the div. Make sure your left and right margins are equal in your stylesheet too.

Mozilla Newbie
Well, my Internet Explorer has been become so corrupted by adware and spyware that it became pretty useless. Rather than uninstall it and reinstall the same super-insecure browser, I've finally decided to give up on IE and go with Mozilla 1.6.
So far, everything works great except for photographs. The pictures in the sidebars of caughtintheXfire and Everyday Stranger look kinda like they were turned into rough watercolors in PhotoShop or something.
So, tell me, Mozilla users... wus up wit dat? And..er..what can I do about it? :)

Just kidding... actually, the images look OK for me on my laptop... I have had problems with color rendering within Mozilla when I used my desktop and old monitor with no resolution... maybe if you increased the color quality in your display properties settings if would help.

Y'mean the color quality adjustments in the browser or in my computer? Photos always looked fine in IE, but in Mozilla they're -- I'm not exaggerating -- like the roughest watercolor setting of PhotoShop. I had to view an image that I already KNEW was a photo before I realized that the previous photos I seen in M 1.6 actually photos rather than PhotoShop watercolors. Hmmmm...

The color quality adjustments on your computer... one of the reasons I didn't switch over to Mozilla earlier than I did was the funky image rendering. I was getting funky pink backgrounds on all my transparent gif images. And it seemed really slooooow. I uninstalled it and went on my way. I reinstalled to test site design and started liking it better the more I used it. After the re-install, all the images were fine... don't ask me, I don't know why.

Annika: Unfortunately, you need to patch the vulnerability in IE that allows the hijacks in the first place. In most cases, it's being caused by Microsoft's 'problematic' Java Virtual Machine. Best bet is to simply uninstall it and replace it with Sun's version. It's also possible one file has managed to escape deletion. The hijackers spread themselves all across your hard drive and if even 1 file remains, it will likely be able to reinstall itself.
Anybody that's having IE infection problems and would like a hand, I'd be happy to help, by email or YIM. I've had pretty good results with about a half dozen people on the web, plus the dozen or so clients I've cleared up in person. There are some automated tools that are much more effective than trying to nail everything by hand.
And yes, the most effective solution is switching to Mozilla or FireFox. It's a vastly more useful browser (especially for bloggers) in my opinion, and unquestionably more secure.

Only A Ping In A Gilded Cage
Ping!
Okay, we seem to have a slight problem with trackbacks.
As in, they don't work.
I'm looking into it now.
Update: Debbye just pinged me, and it worked fine. Weird. Still working on it...
Blah!
Update: I just pinged myself, and it worked - when I used autodiscovery. When I put the URL in the ping box, it didn't work.
Weirder and weirder.
I just pinged Xset, which is running on a separate installation of MT. Autodiscovery worked; manual ping failed.
I can sort of see what's happening, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. It's treating some incoming pings as requests to view the ping page.
Pinged myself again. Buuut... Is this a problem with incoming pings, or with outgoing pings?
Blaaaweeef! Head hurties!

MuNu Pull Down Menu Corrections
I noticed a coupe of minor errors in the pull down list of Munuvians and they have been corrected. Most notably stoooopid is that since I copied the script I set up for my own page - I did not include my own site!!!
I would suggest replacing the entire list section of the script. This will give you all the fixes and the new sites listed here.

We is up!
Everything should have transferred smoothly, but if you do happen to notice anything odd, let me know. The old database is still around, so if any posts got dropped or broken during the move, we can fix it good as new.
And it is faster :)

It's much better, isn't it?
Which means I can take my time with Minx and do it right, rather than trying to rush it to fix our performance problems.
Which is a good thing, because I've just run into some scaling issues with the database I'm using.

I'll be converting the database this weekend. Starting Sunday 2AM GMT, should be finished around 10AM GMT.
During that time, you will not be able to post, and readers will not be able to leave comments. It's Sunday!* Sleep in! Go fishing! Vacuum the cat!
Oh yes: You won't be able to change your templates, rebuild your blogs, edit existing entries, receive trackbacks, import, export... But your blog will still be readable.
Once it's all over, things should be a lot faster. Probably at least three times, possibly more.
* Possibly Saturday where you are.

But what about my precious Sunday 2am GMT to 10am GMT hits? Oh, the horror. I'd better not get an Instalanche this weekend. Feeling pretty safe on that but you never know.

Your blog will still be up, and sitemeter will count all those Instalanches. People won't be able to leave snarky comments, that's all.

OK, for those of us without a clue as to how to convert time ... can you do like a rocket ship thing, where you post T minus someting?

Well, Munuviana is GMT (or should be... let's see)

Hrm. Well, if Munuviana is in fact GMT, the server is running an hour fast. Pfft!
Anyway: T minus 31 hours!

Hi gang:
The easiest way to keep track of this is just to doubleclick your system clock in the lower right corner of your screen, and reset teh time zone temporarily to GMT (it's the same as London England) Also, the line that list
your actual time zone will show how many hours behind GMT you are. Mine for Mountain time looks like this:
(GMT -7:00) Mountian Time (USA & Canada)
That means I'm 7 hours behind GMT... so I subtract 7 hours from Pixy's listed 2am Sunday time and get 7pm Saturday night. Those on Eastern time in US & Canada it'll happen at 9pm Saturday, and those on Pacific time will see it at 6pm.
Clear as mud?

Hopefully prep for the system work will go better than that commercial where the guy drops a rover off the access tower to that rocket... you know the one where he replaces it with his SUV? Too cute.
I guess we'll know things are going smoothly if no one sees an "oh sh*t" posted here or elsewhere.

Vanity being what it is...
I've been looking for a way to post audio files. I looked at Radio365, and that ain't cheap, which is a requirement at this point. I can't get into my goodie-pile (or even my webmail) because it keeps telling me the link is down, the server is bad, evil has taken over the world, please try again later. I thought there was something in there that would allow for that.
Anyone got any ideas? Doesn't have to be an hours long radio show, updated weekly, or such. Just an ability to post rants, maybe an occaisional song from my friends, etc.
Let me know. I'm a looking.

First you gotta convert the audio file to mp3. I do that with a program called CDex that I downloaded for free. I'm sure a google search will point to their website.
Once you've got the mp3 saved in My Documents you then use an FTP (file transfer protocol) to upload it to the munu server. The FTP program that I use is an ecellent one called WS_FTP and is also a freebie download.

Part of my problem is getting the voice from me and into a file. Do I need a digital recorder for that? Or is there something I can download to emulate a digital recorder and record into a file? From that point, I can see these other things working. It's the mystery of going from analog to digital that has my tiny little mind fried.

Plug a microphone into your computer
And then... I'm sure Windows comes with a program for recording... Or if not, your sound card/motherboard does.
Exactly what error are you getting from your goodie pile? (I assume you mean CPanel.) It should be working!

Overwhelmed
OK, now that I have my super-sexy broadband (it's almost better than sex. No, scratch that-considering some of my exes, it
is actually better than sex), I wanted to add the new Munuvians to my sidebar.
Problem is, I hadn't realized that we have gone into the mouse reproductive cycles for new blogs, so I am overwhelmed.
Does anyone have the latest list of the Munu blogs for the sidebar, that I can copy and paste?
And...um...do you have it in alphabetical order, since I am anal retentive?
If anyone needs me, I will be in a fetal position under the table. Or else using a magical whirring toy, thinking about my broadband.

A Rose By Any Other... Yadda Yadda
A trivial thing, but I'd like to change the name under which I post from LeeAnn to The Cheese. Or maybe the Cheesemistress of Chaos.
Now, my question.... (s)....
Is this possible? How is it done? Will it be retroactive and change all the past entries?
I know that Google and others have caches or whatever, so if someone did want to find evildoings involving this "LeeAnn" person, they most certainly could. However, although I do not blog from work on work time using work equipment, I'd like to continue to blog ABOUT work and make it more difficult, if the powers-that-be so choose, to know it's me.
Plus I just really like that whole Cheesemistress of Chaos tag.
Any suggestions, ye who know all?

Probably the best thing to do is to change your nickname to "Cheesemistress of Chaos", and then change your template to use your nickname (<MTEntryAuthorNickname>) instead of your name (<MTEntryAuthor>).
If you do this, it will indeed be retroactive and will change all the past entries as soon as you do a rebuild.

Quick Questions to Fellow Munuvians
Hi to all the friendly people of Munuvia! This is Dave of
Blogo Slovo, the blog dedicated to News, Politics and other Semi-Coherent Ramblings, with an emphasis on things Slavic (coherent or otherwise).
First of all, let me thank Pixy Misa and Jim Peacock for inviting me to join and helping me to get set up. I'm still working on the migration to the MuNu site, I plan to go live on May 1 (May Day and all, you know). And I have a few questions for the crowd:

1. Check the side bar under USEFUL THINGS
2. No knowledge
3. Probably
4. I personally don't like them, but I suspect if you really want to read a lot of blogs without seeing all the pretty eyecandy, they are useful
5. On the MT console, where you type the stuff you publish, there is a button, about third down on the left, that says upload images. It is pretty self explanatory from there.
6. Not me, that is not near Chicago, not that I would not like to bash beers and talk blogs.

Aggregators are to reading blogs what paper is to reading books.
Or something like that...
I'm using SharpReader (http://www.sharpreader.net) and it's wonderful. And free. It makes keeping up with my favorite blogs oh so much easier. Did I mention it was free?
