Umm - Pixy? What's this that I read over at Slashdot?
"The world's first free national wireless grid is no longer with us, after waves from Cyclone Heta swept over Niue's thirty metre cliffs, destroying everything. Although only one person died, the damage is so bad that there is talk of winding up the country , meaning their fortuitous ccTLD could go the way of .su. Perhaps the easiest way for Slashdotters to help Niue would be to choose a .nu domain over the dull alternatives."
Just curious. I kind of like our TLD...
Posted by Daniel at January 13, 2004 12:01 PMYes, I saw that.
While I'd be very unhappy if the nu TLD disappeared (taking mu.nu with it), it isn't likely. The su TLD still exists and works today, and it's been a long time since there was a Soviet Union.
I think it's just another case of Slashdotters getting overwrought (as is their wont).
According to this article, there are 110,000 active .nu domains, 70,000 of which are used in Sweden (apparently nu is Swedish for "now"). I doubt that a TLD with 110,000 active domains (at 60 euros a year each!) would get closed down in a hurry.
Posted by Pixy Misa at January 13, 2004 12:30 PMAlso, the talks regarding Niue becoming part of New Zealand mention Norfolk Island as a model. (Norfolk Island is part of Australia.)
Norfolk Island has its own TLD, .nf.
Posted by Pixy Misa at January 13, 2004 12:34 PMeven if the island does go down the pan, with 100,000 nu domains it will be taken over by someone - thats way to much guarenteed income to pass up!
Posted by Robert at January 13, 2004 02:12 PMTop Level Domain.
More specifically, .nu is a ccTLD - Country Code Top Level Domain.
.com, .net, .org and so on are non-cc TLDs.
Posted by Pixy Misa at January 14, 2004 04:19 AMIf I ever notice that www.denbeste.nu suddenly becomes www.denbeste.blogspot.com, I'll worry. 'Til then: Let the cow puppies graze!
Posted by Tuning Spork at January 14, 2004 04:20 AMIf the worst happens and .nu does disappear, we will have a home at munu.net. Not quite as nice, but better than blogspot.
