Every so often I get some adware and spyware gumming up the works and I periodically (like, every other day) run Adaware and spyguide to get rid of them.
However, over the year or so that I've been using this particular PC, strange tasks have been building up in my task scheduler -- right now there are about 12 of them and they really slow down my 'puter. They aren't actually listed in the task scheduler, of course, so I can't stop them from initiating at the boot-up.
I can press ctrl+alt+delete and end them one-by-one, but, each time that I reboot there they are again --- about 12 of 'em.
Does anyone know how in the heck I can get these vermin out of my task scheduler once and for all?
Also, each time I reboot I have to go to the control panel / internet options and re-list my IE homepage (I usually use Drudge), because it's replaced, everytime, with some obscure search engine's home page. That and the task scheduler issue means that I have to spend my first five minutes or so just cleaning up the same ol' mess. grrrrr

I'm afraid you've been HiJacked. It's not really as bad as it sounds, but a malware program has worked its way onto your computer and is taking advantage of Internet Explorer weaknesses to constantly push itself in front of you. The hijacked home page is the giveaway. And you're right, it will seriously slow down your machine
When you say task scheduler... do you mean the Task Manager? That comes up when you Ctrl Alt Del? If that's where you're finding unwanted programs running, there's a utility in Windows to disable them at startup. Click the Start button, then Run. In the Run box, type msconfig and press enter. The window that opens will have a tab at the far right end labelled Startup and will list what services are loading at startup. To disable a service, just unclick its checkbox. If later you get an error that something you want doesn't run right, you can just come back to that tab and replace the checkmark. Some of the names may be pretty cryptic, but a Google search will usually give you an explanation if you're not sure.
You should also go to your Add/Remove Programs link in your Control Panel, and make sure there are no questionable or unknown programs installed. Look especially for search bars, special toolbars (aside from the Google toolbar which is excellent) and the like. Also, if you have installed Kazaa or other file sharing programs, you will be badly infected & will need to do an extensive uninstall & cleanout process for them.
The problem with some malware, especially including hijackers, is that they are hidden all over your drive and will restart themselves even after you've stopped them. The only way to get rid of this behaviour is to totally nuke the hijacker. This is extrememly difficult to do by hand, but several excellent free (donation-supported) programs have been written to do it for you. One in particular to try in addition to AdAware is called Spybot Search & Destroy. It installs and is updated just like AdAware, but finds some different pests. Run it right after AdAware, before rebooting. Clean what it finds, then if it asks, allow it to run again on it's own upon the next reboot. It will have the best chance of succeeding if you try to turn off as many questionable programs with Task Manager as possible before starting the cleanout process.
If that doesn't solve your problem, feel free to email me with the name of the search page that comes up as your IE start page, and maybe I can suggest a scanner specifically designed to kill that hijacker.
Note that you'll want to make certain your system is completely updated with Critical Updates from update.microsoft.com, especially the Microsoft Virtual Machine update. In fact, if you want to be really secure, it's best to uninstall the Microsoft VM and replace it with the one provided by Sun. (Microsoft isn't even allowed to continue to support it's version anymore) The ultimate solution is to switch browsers to Mozilla or FireFox, but I know that's a big step you might not want to take yet. Both these browsers are far less susceptible to theses kinds of attacks though, so something to consider.
