Why is my computer yelling at me?

First, showing how dumb I can be, I didn't realize that I wouldn't have to ping a munuvian. Duh! Why all the pings when you post my dear! Okay, so I finally got that bit through my thick head.

But this last time I posted, linking to Auterific and Snooze button, I got this message:

2004.08.08 21:41:55 80.178.121.136 'Rachel Ann' added entry #40354
2004.08.08 21:42:39 80.178.121.136 Ping 'http://ping.blo.gs/' failed: Ping error: Weblog already updated recently.
2004.08.08 21:42:40 80.178.121.136 Ping 'http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2' failed: Ping error: Thanks for the ping, however we can only accept one ping every half-hour.
2004.08.08 21:42:42 80.178.121.136 Ping 'http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2' failed: Ping error: Thanks for the ping, however we can only accept one ping every half-hour.

Sniff, sniff. I wanted both Linda and Jim pinged. I know Linda got pinged, but I'm not sure Jim did. If "they only accept one ping every half-hour, how do I ping more than one munuvian?

Rachel-Ann

The ping errors you are seeing are for pings that update the 'metablog' sites. These are sites that keep an ongoing, real-time list of recently updated blogs. (They don't show any content, just a list of blogs that have recently updated.) These pings don't have anything to do with the ones that trackback your post to someone else's.

They often (usually) give errors, probably because they are considering all MuNu bloggers to be coming from the same domain and only allow 1 ping every 1/2 hour (and the chances of 'somebody' here not already having posted within any 1/2 hour period are pretty slim.)

That said, the safest way to check is to actually go to the person's post you're linking to check for your trackback, as often you can get time-out errors even though the ping has gone through successfully.

As an aside, the delay while trying to ping some of the metablog sites can really slow down your posting. If you want, you can just turn them off - not a bad idea since they often don't get through anyway. To turn them off, go to your blog's MT administrative page, click on the Weblog Config button on the left side, then click on the Publicity/RemoteInterfaces/Trackback link. Once there, you'll see the checkboxes for blo.gs and weblogs.com. Just uncheck the boxes. This will have no effect on the process of sending trackback pings to other blogs to which you link.

While you are there, you'll want to make sure there is an entry added into the Others box for Blogrolling. By including that site in your pings, people who have you in their Blogroll-powered lists can get a notification each time your blog is updated. Enter the following code in the box, if it's not already there:
http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/

Once you've made your changes, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save. Once the page has refreshed, you'll see a sentence in green text near the top of the page saying Your blog preferences have been saved. REBUILD to see those changes reflected on your public site.

By clicking on the word REBUILD, a small popup window will appear. In that window, use the dropdown list to select Rebuild Indexes Only, then click the Rebuild button. That will make put your changes into effect.

Thanks, Paul! While I knew about the pinging time-outs, I didn't know I could add blogrolling manually! Cool!
