Is it just me, or does most of the comment/trackback spam come from old archived posts. I know a number of sites that close comments and trackbacks after a certain period of time--say, one or two weeks. I'm pretty sure there is a script for this. Wouldn't a quick and easy solution be to institute a no comments/trackbacks allowed policy after a post is a couple of weeks old?
Posted by Rusty at March 23, 2005 07:58 PMWe have a script installed for closing comments. There's a post here somewhere explaining it.
We still need to find one for closing trackbacks, though. That's also something missing from MT3.

It's definitely available for MT3.
I'm just on my way out for dinner, but will dig it out and contact you when I have it.

Posted by Light & Dark at March 24, 2005 01:20 AMThanks.
MT Blacklist 2 automatically blocks comments to old posts, but not trackbacks. I'd be happy to install another plugin for that.
Posted by Pixy Misa at March 24, 2005 02:42 AMRats. The plugin I was thinking of allows forcing moderation of trackbacks, not closing them. Looks like MT-Close 2 is still the only way to do that.
That said, I've had extremely high effectiveness on a couple of sites with renaming and obfuscating the TB script the same way as with the comment script. Unfortunately, its effectiveness lasts only a month or so, then the files need to be renamed again. Not sure if there's any way to make that workable with the massively-multiblogger MuNu setup due to the rebuilding requirement. (there is a way to automate the changing and rebuilding, but the server load would be intense.)
