New spammer at bat. Five minutes, 10,710 spams. The previous instance was unusual only in its duration.
Oh, and this one struck out. Probably thanks to Super-Fluffy. :)

For trackbacks, you may want to convert to using g-trackbacks instead. I get about 5 spams an hour via trackback (which isn't bad) and all get filtered. Unfortunately I get too many positive trackbacks filtered. I'm thinking of converting too but I hate that trackbacks won't be seen inside my articles. In your case though you may have no choice! Gah!
For example, Sam's site would be:
http://google.com/blogsearch?hl=en&scoring=d&q=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.samanthaburns.com&btnG=Search+Blog
I was getting absolutely hammered with comment SPAM too (every 20 seconds I was hit - not as bad as you though), but I found a trick (without those "type some weird image text here"). I'm just afraid to tell anyone because if I do and others use it - no doubt the spammers will find a work around if it is popularized. Selfish, perhaps. Self preserving - yes.
Unfortunately the trick won't work for trackbacks
