Setting up forums

I know that using some combination of Fantastico and other assorted goodies I can set up a page that runs forums...my only question is how? Step by step from start to finish would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and happy Thanksgiving.

Log in to CPanel.

Click on the little happy face.

Scroll down to forums. Select either phpBB (which is a real pain because it has urgent security updates every few weeks) or SMF (which looks good but I don't really know anything about it).

Click on the New Installation link and follow the instructions.

Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a brand new puppy forum! Remember, forums are for life, not just for Christmas Thanksgiving, and you do need to update the software regularly. If you're not going to customise the forum, this isn't too hard.

Or - if this would suit your purpose - I can create you a subforum off the main munu forums, in which case what you need to do is say "Pixy, can you create a subforum for me?"

Thanks, Pixy. My only question is how do I get the forum to reside at (for example) http://simonworld.mu.nu/forums ?

Is that part of the install process or is there some funky thing I need to do?

That's part of the install process. It will ask you what directory you want to install in, and if you say forums, then the forums will show up at http://simonworld.mu.nu/forums :)

OK, did all that using SMF (should I try the other one???) and got:

Well, I haven't tried SMF, but it is supposed to work.

Just go with the other one. ;)
