Some Lost HTML

Boohoo!!! I mysteriously lost some of my HTML! I'm not sure how I did it. How can I get it back? (ASSuming I CAN get it back!) Help!

Gratefully yours,
Mark

Uhh... Mark, you're going to have to be a whole lot more specific if anybody's going to have a chance of helping you.

HTML is the actual code that determines what displays on your page. Do you mean that part of your template is missing (ie the pieces that appear on every page)? Or do you mean that actual post content is missing?

What exactly are you expecting to see that isn't showing, and exactly what pages are missing it?

I thought "HTML" always referred to actual code.

A part of my main template is no longer there. Because part of that template is not there, certain links will not appear on my main page. I am wondering if it is possible to retrieve that information.

Post content is not affected.

I can dig your template out of the backups. When was the last time you know for sure it was working (so I can get the right backup file)?

Mark, you're absolutely right, but I needed to make sure we were talking about the same thing - many poeple use the term to refer to anything that's on a webpage, and that gets confusing if we're not talking about the same thing.

While Pixy's digging in the backups, it's worth mentioning that it's possible to add code to your template which can interfere with existing code (unclosed tags, for example) and will make it look like other code has disappeared.

Have you made any changes to your template recently? Exactly what part of the template is now missing? Have you confirmed that the code is actually gone from the template, or just that its output is missing from the page?

(Sorry if this sounds simplistic, I have no idea of your level of expertise.)

Pixy: I am pretty sure it was working fine on Sunday afternoon.

Paul: I don't recall adding or removing anything. A portion of my links and other goodies do not appear on the main page. The code itself is also missing.

Yikes... looks like a PixyBackup is definitely your best be then.

I did plan ahead for this. Atleast I tried. I saved my HTML on a floppy, which I cannot find. Even if I could, my new comp does not have a floppy for some reason. I tried installing a floppy drive on the new comp, but it doesn't have a bracket inside to support it, so I guess I'd have to buy one, which I have not done yet.

Turn in next week for more "Days of Our HTML."

Okay, I'll unpack the backup from Sunday morning and retrieve the little lost template. :)
