...ban the IPs of spammers?
I rarely ever get comment/TB spam (guess I'm not that popular... *sniff*) but I got hit with a half a dozen comments from some seemingly normal sounding names where the links send you to arubadev.com or altposters1.com or something like that...
I just copied and pasted the IP addys and banned them... is this practice even worth it?
Posted by Kyer at April 25, 2006 05:27 PM | TrackBackIt's probably not worth it, Kyer. Pixy has a really good spam-trackback-IP-eating critter named Snark that automatically kills trackback spammers' IP's much more effectively than we ever could manually.
Most comment spammers are using rotating proxies and have literally thousands of IP addresses available, so you're badly outgunned on that front. (And definitely don't add IP addresses to the Blacklist as they are totally useless there and should not be added.)

Posted by Light & Dark at April 26, 2006 02:42 AMYep. It's very effective for trackbacks, where we can get hundreds of thousands of trackbacks from a single server, but not worthwhile at all for comments (from what I've seen). And as Paul said, for trackbacks it's taken care of automatically, so you don't need to do anything.
Posted by Pixy Misa at April 26, 2006 06:06 AMI just banned every IP logged for trackback spam from submitting comments, so we'll see if that helps at all.
