Yuri fell over yet again.
This time I do have a record of what was happening at the time, and the answer is, a hell of a lot. The server was out of swap space, and processing several hundred simultaneous requests.
That could be an attack, or a hardware problem, or a software failure. I can, however, eliminate certain kinds of attacks, hardware problems, and software failures, so it's a step forward.
I can move everyone over to Kei, and I might do so this weekend if I don't make any progress on fixing the problem. Kei by herself is more powerful than the previous munuserver, so it should cope okay.

You may notice that the Movable Type search function is no longer working. This is not a coincidence.
I'll see if I can whip up a new search routine this weekend.
Posted by Pixy Misa at May 12, 2006 01:14 AMGreat detective work Pixy - and in only an hour.
Serious chops.
Posted by Light & Dark at May 12, 2006 05:52 AMThanks. Once I had the new logging facilities, it was pretty obvious what was going on. Out of memory, out of swap, load average over 300... Let's see what's running. There's how many copies of search.cgi?
Okay, chmod 000 that one.
Posted by Pixy Misa at May 12, 2006 06:16 AMI removed the search box from my blog, claimed my blog on Technorati and put up their search box, it works way faster and obviously won't smackdown poor Yuri.
