Spent a few hours today whacking the comment system over the head with a large hammer.
The result will - I hope - be less spam. It will certainly help me to track how the spam is getting in. We've got three comment systems running now; two copies of Movable Type, and Minx. I know it's not Minx that's the main problem, so what I need to find out is which of the two copies of MT is having problems - or if there's something else that I've forgotten.
Anyway, any posts more than about a month old have now had comments closed, very very forcibly. There's nothing worse than looking up an old post to find twenty screenfuls of porn spam attached to it.
I still have to clean up the existing mess, but I've started on that, and I'm going to add some comment management tools to Minx that will also work on your MT comments.

Posted by David Boxenhorn at August 16, 2006 07:56 PMSo that's the noises I was hearing earlier. Good to know you're knocking things into shape.
Posted by michele at August 17, 2006 06:49 PMI think it needs some more whacking with that hammer...
Posted by mookie at August 22, 2006 06:52 PMYeah, there's no end to the whacking around here.
Will this enable me to nuke old S_P_A_M comments en masse, or should I continue just going through and deleting each one of the several thousand manually?
Thanks!
Posted by Bravo Romeo Delta at August 26, 2006 11:49 PMI'm working on something to help zap the old spam as well as block incoming spam. So don't invest too much time in it in the next month or so, because after that it will be much easier to deal with.
