I just rebuilt my site, as suggested by Pixy, after noticing that my most recent post appeared twice even though it was only posted once. Now there are no posts showing on the main page. The list of recent entries seems to work, however. I'm not sure whether something happened to my template, or something is dysfunctional in the setup, or... you know, it's a "whoops".

It's just that your main page was set to only show the last 7 days, so when you rebuilt it 8 days after the last post, it went blank. (Which is the default way that Movable Type works, so it's happened to lots of people.)
I've changed it to show the last 10 posts instead.

Thanks. That didn't even occur to me, though I sort of knew it wasn't a serious issue. My posting has slowed quite a bit, but I intend to pick it up as soon as the "local scenario" settles down.
