Stage 3

The next stage of the Minx beta, once I get a few more bugs knocked over the head and a few missing features in place, is an invitation beta for mee.nu.

Every mu.nu blogger will get a bunch of beta keys (five or ten to start with) that they can hand out to your readers. The keys are just alphanumeric codes, like A5EC78F, that you can email out to people.

The key lets the user sign up for a lifetime free "Express" account at mee.nu, which would normally cost $5 per month ($50 per year). That gives you 1GB of disk space and 10GB of bandwidth, which is enough for a smallish blog. (Typepad give 100MB of space and 2GB of bandwidth for that price, by comparison.)

Comment here or email me at andrew -at- pixymisa -dot- net if you're interested, and let me know how many keys you'd like. I'm hoping to start sending the keys out this Sunday or Monday.

Oh, and please don't post the keys on your blog. Each key is good for one person only, so you'll need to email or IM them. Feel free to run competitions or whatever you like. If you run out of keys, I'll be handing out more until I either run out (can only give away so many free acounts) or we hit the end of the beta period.

Thanks!

I'm in for, say ten.

I'm in for 5, although I might give a couple back.

No give backs!!

If they don't all get used, that's not a problem.

five sounds like a good number, though ten would be great. I just think that the lower number keeps from overwhelming you with free members to the new service.

And i've got some folks in mind to offer them to already.

Thanks for all you do, dude!

Send five my way too, if that's OK. Got an idea for a content.

Cheers.

P.S. 301 redirect?

Hey Pixy,
Can I get a minx site? I broke the template on mookieriffic.mu.nu a while ago, but never got it fixed... but I figured now would be a semi convenient time to start fresh.

Hi Pixy,

Hate to sound whiney, but here goes...

301 redirect? I'm getting nailed on SEO because every one of my posts looks like it has multiple distinct sources:

stevejanke.com
www.stevejanke.com (redirect to stevejanke.com)
www.stephenjanke.com (redirect to stevejanke.com)
stephenjanke.com (redirect to stevejanke.com)
angrygwn.mu.nu (redirect to stevejanke.com)
www.angrygwn.mu.nu (redirect to stevejanke.com)

When Google sees the same article under different URLs, the ranking for all of them suffers, since it looks spammy.

Then why have different domains in the first place? Because in my case, the search for my name "steve janke" or "stephen janke" is one of the top ways to get to my site (I'm pretty well known in Canada -- go figure). So if I didn't own my own domain names, some pills spammer notice the searches and would grab those domains to host his crap.

So on the one hand, multiple domains can hurt your rank. On the other, not own those domains can hurt your credibility. The 301 redirect tells the search engine that these are actually the same site and to treat them as one.

Just to let people know why this matters. A lot of bloggers are only peripherally cognizant of search engine behaviour.

I've been testing the 301 redirect, and it only redirects the main page, not individual pages. I can do that for you if that will suffice.

(By the way, the www prefix doesn't matter at all. Google is at least that smart.)

I'll take the root directory. Lots of high quality links are going to angrygwn.mu.nu only.

What is the mu.nu server software? Are you using an htaccess file to do the redirect?

From http://www.websitesource.com/tutorials/301-setup.shtml:

>>>>>>>>

Redirecting pages become easier once you know the way to apply the .htaccess file. In order to use the .htaccess file, you need to open your FTP and login to the site. Search for the .htaccess file in the root web folder. In case there is no .htaccess file; you will have to create one. You can use a Notepad to create a .htaccess file. Make sure you insert a period before the file name and use no extensions. It should look like this – “.htaccess”

You need to create a code to make .htaccess work. Usually it reads like this:

Redirect Permanent / http://www.sitename.com/
Or
Redirect 301 / http://www.sitename.com/

Redirect Permanent or Redirect 301 tells the server to redirect the site permanently. The “/” indicates that everything in the site from top to bottom need to be redirected. In this process, all the present pages and links in the search engine results that are there for the old site, will be redirected to the top level of the current site.

There is also a great tutorial on .htaccess here.

Hey, there's a "redirect" function on CPanel. I could have sworn it wasn't there before. Can I muck around with this myself?

Posted by Steve Janke at April 3, 2007 03:58 PM

The redirect in CPanel is what I was using - it won't do the job.

.htaccess, on the other hand, could work well. I'll play with that a little.

Hey Steve, try it now!

Sorry it took so long, but it seems to be working, and I didn't even have to take down your site while I did it.

Very cool. I'll keep you informed on how it affects the page ranking, traffic, and so forth.

Pixy,

Did you ever send out the keys? Been having issues with Bellsouth so I was going to offer an alternate email address, hgraylin1@gmail.com.

If you've not sent them...um...then never mind. :)

This is no doubt what I've been asking for in them emails, so do indeed send away. I'd expect that once one key is activated I can give the wee wifey, her partner and myself access to their one blog on one key, but send the full package and I'll find takers for the rest.

Haven't sent out the keys yet, but hope to do so today. Just trying to get a few more features/fixes in place so that people don't have to report the same problems.
