This is measured by calendar month, so the problem tends to crop up in the last couple of days each month. I set the bandwidth limits so that if, say, you post a picture and someone hotlinks it at a popular site, it doesn't eat all the bandwidth for the entire server before I know about it. (And I think we are losing a lot of bandwidth to hotlinkers, but I haven't got around to fixing that. Hotlink control is built into Minx, though.)
We have plenty of bandwidth to spare, so I can always bump it up as needed. It's just a safety check.
