A strange question

OK, this might sound a bit weird, but there was some ecological message that went across the screen while I was at the theater this afternoon that said if we all unplugged our TV sets when we were not usin' 'em, the amount of 'lectricity we would save would be near the annual amount generated at Hoover Dam. My question is exactly why is my TV is still using 'lectricity after I switched it off? Jes' figgered with all the brain power floatin' 'round the Munu universe, surely one or two of ya'll could put the answer in simple enough words for me to understand.

If you have a recent TV, it will stay in standby mode so that the remote control will work to turn it on. That probably uses less than a watt of power, but there must be a couple of hundred million TVs in America, so it starts to add up.

Yeah, but it would seem that a mass of other appliances would use more electricity than a single TV on stand-by. There must be a bigger energy drain than less than one watt for someone to have actually created an ecological ad advising you to unplug it from the wall when not in use.

Tiger: Don't forget to plug it back in or your remote won't work!

Tiger, you are assuming that these people think logically.

I also read that if we successfully removed all of the carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere we would reduce global temperatures by about 3 degrees. But it would matter because all of the plants would die due to lack a needed element of photosynthesis, and we would all be dead very shortly there after. It's one of those circle of life things.

What a nice thing that would be! But i mean, come on. Whose actually gonna unplug their tv EVERY time they don't use it? Whew. Seems like to much work. I'm sweating just THINKING about it! heehee.
