Lost Children

If you posted a post just recently and it's not there now, it probably got left behind in the move. That doesn't mean it's gone; just a little lost.

Let me know and I can dig it out from the old server for you.

If you have a mailing list or some other thingy set up in CPanel, and it didn't come along for the ride, you can get to your CPanel account on the old server by going to http://old.mu.nu:2082/ and logging in with your normal CPanel login and password. I'm not sure whether that will help you much, so give me a yell if you need a hand getting something moved.

Burp

Okay, I've visited every MuNu blog and forum, and left comments on most of them, and everything seems to be working except for USURP, which I will fix. (And Nick's mailing list, which I'll have to retrieve from the old server.)

Wups! And Lemurgirl's borked too. Have to fix that,

If you have any problems, do let me know, and I will jump on them and tear them into tiny pieces fix them ASAP.

I'm going to take a little nap, and then I'll be back.

YOUCH!!

What happened to my post. I just posted something to my website and it isn't showing up. Then I posted something on that and it didn't show up. I've two posts listed in my entry that aren't appearing, at least to me. I have saved and rebuilt. Is something else happening? Thanks,

Moving, Like, Right Now!

We're moving to the new server right this moment. I've disabled comments with a friendly message.

See you all in a couple of hours!

...

Update: Make that five hours. Erk.

I think it's done, though. Let's see if this posts...

Update: Yes! :)

Monkeys Again!!

Yes, the monkeys struck again, but at least this time they didn't break anything, and I have the server set so that everything comes back up cleanly. (Which it should do in any case, but doesn't...)

Bah.

Anyway, we'll be moving tomorrow (Sunday) as planned.

The Muuuve

The Muve is on!

This Sunday, 31st October, starting at 1AM GMT.

The move should take less than an hour, but there's an issue with DNS catching up to where we've gone, which may take a bit longer. I can mitigate that, but because DNS is distributed I don't have complete control over it.

And then... No more monkeys!

Munuvians are now Google News Source

Hey folks, a couple of you might have heard about my campaign to add The Jawa Report (formerly My Pet Jawa) to Google News as a source. I figured if Kos was 'news' than so was half the crap I write--and I guess from time to time I do actually break a story.

Anyway, Google added me a couple of days ago. The side-benefit for all of you is that it looks like they added the entire mu.nu extension instead of just my blog. I hope you won't get too irritated if all of your blogs show up on Google News as "The Jawa Report", but at least this might increase traffic some. Simon reports that he's already showing up for a post he did on the Japanese hostage on Google News. I would say don't expect a landslide of hits, but if you do commentary on current events you might be pleasently surprised with the sitemeter.

This also shows the power and the future of blogs. A number of blogs have broken stories and others, like mine, have been used by the MSM as sources (plagiarism I call it!!) for their stories for quite some time. Now let's get out their and put Dan Rather to shame!

MuNu Is On The Muve (Again)

Due to our formerly reliable hosting provider being taken over by a bunch of illiterate fucking monkeys whose idea of a good time is to wait until I've gone to bed and then reboot the server and to break something new and exciting each time*, we will be moving to our new server this weekend.**

There will be a little bit of downtime, but it should be rather less than we've had from any one of the recent monkey-related incidents.

Now I just have to work out how to do it... I actually have everything on the new server already, but Fantastico and your individual CPanel accounts aren't configured yet.

In the meantime, I now understand how Frank J feels. Goddam monkeys!

Update: The CPanel account transfer thingy seems to work, so that part is easy. Now I just have to configure Fantastico on the new box, and plan things so that downtime is minimised. I'll post an exact time for the move here shortly. During the move, posting and comments will be disabled, but your blogs will at least be readable.

Update: Fantastico is configured now! Yay! Now I just have to, um, do some work. ;)

* And adding to the joy this morning, some sort of network problem meant I couldn't even reach the server to fix it.

** The monkeys are our new hosting company are extremely laid back and if the server goes down they'll send me an email once they finish their banana. They wouldn't even think of getting out of their comfy chairs to screw up a server.

Sad/Happy

I'm feeling a little schizophrenic, but I wanted to let you all know I've transferred my hosting of margilowry-dot-com to Blogs-About Hosting.

This in NO WAY is reflective of the kindness shown to me by The Reverend Pixy and the rest of the Munuvian Tribe; not at all. I love you all and I hope to be considered an Honorary Munuvian. (The transfer will take approximately 5 to 7 days, so I mean after THAT. LOL)

No, it's so that I can no longer be accused of "crying poverty" when, in fact, I never did such a thing.

So this is not a farewell, just a "So long and thanks for all the fish!"

Love,
Margi

Help! Weird Image Disappearing Act

Hello,

Got a quick question. I am using Advanced Poll on my website, and have for some reason lost all the images inside the folder, and elsewhere related to it. The path hasn't changed and it has been like this for a few weeks. I can't figure it out. I installed it from Fantistico on Cpanel. Any Web Gurus know what's up?

Also, any news on Munu getting Expression Engine or MT 3?

Time To Build

Hi kids.

As suggested by Paul, I've renamed the comments script here at MuNu. For this to take effect, though, everyone needs to rebuild their blog. Just click on the "Rebuild Site" button; it only takes a couple of minutes. Then leave a note here to let me know.

Any new posts will automatically use the new script, so if I turn off the old script in, say, a week's time, that will have the same effect as turning off comments to older posts (at least until you rebuild).

Latest Blacklist Angst

Apparently Kate from Small Dead Animals can't leave the name of her blog in the comments on my own blog. I figure either "dead" or "animals" is the problem. I'd check, but I'm not sure I'm qualified to enter the Blacklist Zone. Let me know if you find the offending word, or if you'd like me to brave the Blacklist myself.

Posted by Attila at 06:55 PM | Comments (7)

Closing The Old Doors?

I understand that it's possible to put script into the server that will close comments on old posts, but it would have to be done Munu wide. I don't know about anyone else, but I have had to close all my old posts, and in fact, even have to keep them closed from up to the past 7 days-I get hit by spam comments constantly, sometimes to the tune of 300 a day.

I now notice that old Munu posts are getting them, so I have been closing my old posts on Munuviana.

Please-can we please consider as a group, the function of closing old posts?

AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!

Many thanks to the hard-working tech support guys at our hosting provider, who logged into the server overnight to do some inessential maintenance and COMPLETELY SCREWED EVERYTHING UP!!!!!

It should all be working now. I'm really sorry about this, folks. I'll work this weekend on getting the new box set up, which is hosted at a place where they don't login to your server and screw things up. (Not because they're smarter or anything, just because they don't do that.)

And I'm really late for work, so I have to run. If you have any problems, you can reach me at andrewm -at- teleone -dot- com -dot- au for the next few hours.

MT Blacklist Conundrum

Here's an interesting Blacklist problem. I just attempted to leave a comment on my blog - Hold the Mayo - in response to another comment. In my comment I referred to John Kerry's thinly disguised socialism.

The problem is someone has blacklisted Cialis. Now I have gotten enough spam to know that blacklisting cialis is a perfectly sensible thing to do.

I also know next to nothing about the function of the blacklist. Is it possible to assign exceptions to a blacklisted word to cover a circumstance such as this?

I did find a work-around that will work for the site author only. Post your comment without the offending word or misspelling it. Then go into the entry page and edit the comment. Editing the comment apparently bypasses the blacklist.

Web-site help

I am writing a web-site for my Masonic Lodge, and I was wondering if you'd all give it a look and tell me what you think. It's pretty basic. I am not much into Eye candy. I believe in simple text based web-sites. As far as I'm concerned it's still 1996 as far as HTML pages go.

hehe.

I hate Bob

I don't even know Bob but I hate bob. I have a feeling I am not alone in hating bob. I know at least one other blogger who hates bob as well. Bob is lucky I don't know him or I might make the papers for wacking him upside the head with a 2x4. In any case, I have deleted his posts, banned his ip addy etc etc, and he keeps coming back.

Short of hiring a hit man how can I can I make sure this guy never shows up on my blog again.

I know it has something to do with blacklist, but I don't want to go messing there, or people will be wanting to hit me upside the head with a 2x4.

A Munuvian (Me) in the News!

On Tuesday I was interviewed about liveblogging by James Hebert who writes for the San Diego Union-Tribune. This morning the article is up, and Mr. Hebert has done a great job with the subject:

Sometimes serious and substantive, sometimes as snarky as the hecklers in a ballpark's bleachers, the liveblog is an offshoot of blogging (or Internet journaling) that harnesses the instantaneity of the Internet to offer real-time commentary on live events.

Whatever else they are, on Wednesday night the liveblogs were almost invariably more entertaining than the actual event – and they often served as a satisfying stand-in for debate viewers' own frustrations.

Go by and read the story!

How do I REM out some lines in my main template? I expect I'll have to take out my Hockey Whoopass Jamboree every now and then, and it would be so much easier to just REM out the line with my logo when I need to.

be sure to stop by and liveblog along with me. If you are liveblogging let me know, and I'll link to you. Leave it in the comments, or email me here: patriotparadox@NOSPAMgmail.com

In other news I will not have a chat, but encourage all to chat in the comments.

Help Moving Archived Entries?

Hey, does anyone know a quick 'n easy way to move a bunch of old entries from one blog to another? I ask because Loren is all set up at his page, and I want to move the entries he posted at Civi-Calls to his new place.

Many thanks, all in advance.

New Latest Visitors

I love the new Latest Visitors! Now, if there were only some way to correlate it with awstats - the problem being that awstats lists only the host name, and Latest Visitors lists only the IP. (Okay, I can get the host name from the IP myself, but it would be nice if Latest Visitors would do it for me... also, some hosts have multiple IPs, but you can tell from their names that they are logically the same.)

Last Debate Chat Party

It has come to my attention that a number of people (ok 2) who wanted to join the debate chat fun on Friday were unable to get there or had some difficulty. I blame the host - which would I guess be me. I should no better than to send an invitation to a party and not include directions for how to get there.

Luckily, I have one more chance to get this right.

The third and final debate between the candidates for President will be held this Wednesday, October 13 at 9:00 EDT. Live debate chat will be held in the Mu.Nu chat room.

As before this will be a BYOB clothing optional event.

See extended entry for directions to the party.

To get to the party, go to the mu.nu portal. You may need to register, but I think that if you are a mu.nu blogger you are already registered.

There's a bunch of cute little icons at the top of the page. Click on the one for chat. In the next window under Who is online there's a little speech bubble with sideways smiley face and a link that says "Click to Join Chat"

If you wind up here, you've gone too far. WAY TOO FAR!!!

Taking the Pep out of Pep Boys

I know not all members of Mu.Nu are Military in fact most likely are not, but I am asking for help from all of you.

I just ran a post titled Military Member Loses Job Over Service.

It is the story of a Naval Reservist who was fired by the PEP Boys Automotive chain because he was called to active duty.

As an active duty member myself I was very heated when I heard about this.

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide in spreading the word on this atrocity. Please, please, please, feel free to trackback to my post and help me spread the word.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

SlagleRock Out!

If you have anything to help me in my fact search please zip over to my site and let me know. Leave your comments in the actual post here. For some reason I can access my site from work, but no Munuviana. I don't know what the deal is.

Thank you all for your help.

I Cheesed It Up

Well, I've crawled my way back into the light, and right off the bat I've buggered something up. When you try to trackback an entry, it goes to my error page.
I recently took all my posts back to the non-category status, and no longer have categories, nor a category archive.
Perhaps one of the resident geniuses can 'splain to me what badness I've done and how I should put it right again?
Pretty please?
Oops, should have said... it's The Cheese Stands Alone, for those of y'all who don't know me. :)

PS... Oops, nevermind, entirely my bad... I've fixed it now.
But it was nice to have a chance to remind you what a trainwreck I am sometimes. Pixy, I found it just as you were telling me the solution.
Thanks.

Reminder - Save The Date

It's another Friday night. And there is nothing to do. No place to go. No friends to meet. You, like me, lead a pathetic life. What do you do? How do escape the drudging horror that is your existence? How do you confirm your utter geekiness and have a good time too?

Turn on the Presidential Candidates Debate this Friday at 9:00 p.m. EDT then log on to the Mu.Nu portal and join in the Chatroom fun.

Its a rollicking good time filled with fun, snarkiness and typos. And plenty of laughing out loud too.

This is a BYOB and clothing optional event.

Blacklist Glitch/Policy Question

Hi. There's a strange little situation occurring regarding the blacklist. A perfectly nice blogger is being harassed by a prolific stalker who leaves weird, inchoherent spam in his name at other websites.

Currently, we have him blacklisted because of the spam. But I'm not so sure this is fair, since it isn't really his fault someone's using his name.

There's no ideal solution, though: if we take him off the blacklist we may have to potentially deal with spam from the stalker in the future.

Perhaps people could leave their input, and Pixy could then make a final determination?

If it's decided that we want to remove him from the blacklist, I'll review the blacklist procedures carefully and do the actual work. (I haven't worked with Blacklist before, but I may as well learn.)

Let me know. Thanks!

VP Chat Party

Assuming, and rightly so, that I would be late in posting an invite to meet in the MuNu chat for the next presidential debate, Tuning Spork has sent the invitation for me. Thanks.

But if you can't make it to the big show on Friday night, be sure to stop in and join the fun during the VP debate Tuesday night 9:00 EDT.

Pajamas are optional - spelling doesn't count.

A standing ovation for Pixy please.

Hey folks;

I think something's gotten a little lost in all the recent discussions about traffic, bandwidth eekage and moving to a bigger server etc.

And that is the fact that, due to Pixy's skills, care and foresight in setting up and managing MuNu, we got through September's monster traffic assault without a single service outtage or crashed blog.

Think about that for a minute. There are many, many individual blogs that have been brought screaming to their knees under that kind of an unprecedented barrage (known as the Slashdot effect). MuNu has over 100 blogs on a single installation of MT, 4 or 5 of which saw massive surges in traffic, and the rest of us didn't even hear a burp.

Pardon me, but FUCKING IMPRESSIVE.

I gotta doff my keyboard to ya Pixy. You've done one hell of a job.

Let's hear it for the Maestro huh?

Debating, Mu.nu.-style pt 2

As Ted and Stephen were the only ones present for the first debate, I'll go 'head and iaaue an early invite.

Friday evening at 9:00pm EDT there will be a Debate Party in the Mu.nu. Chatroom. If yer not registered the Mu.nu. FORUMS, and would like to join us for chat, go register now. It's quick and easy!

Then, on Friday night, just log in and click the Chat icon along the top and wend your way into the chatroom.

Stephen Macklin will be our official host. It's strictly a BYOB event and, as always, clothing is optional. Last one in is a rotten egg. ;P

Spambot Solution???

Bill Whittle wants to know what to do about all the spam that's infesting his comments threads. His friend Great Hairy Silverback (GHS) is busy deleting 700+ spam messages per diem.

I had an idea about setting a Password to get in without requiring registration. I could work like this:

GHS shows up and clicks on Comment. He sees a window that says
"In order to read and/or leavce a comment, Ye must give the secret Password. The secret Password is EJECT. But, don't tell anyone, m'kay?"
GHS types in the word eject and gets into the Comments.

While any breathing person will be able to get in, the spambots will be thwarted.

Heehee!!!

Of course, I have no farkin' idea HOW to set that up, but I'd like to know how so's I can do that on my own blog if some day I start getting Helen-sized spam dumps in my Comments. Is it even possible? Anybody? Beuller?
