Had a little drive failure thingy going on there.
Should be fixed now. And we'll be moving to new servers next week and leaving the old and poopy servers behind, so that will be good.
Update: If your site has gone screwy, just click on the Rebuild Site option in Movable Type, and select Rebuild Indexes Only.
That should fix it.
Hello All,

Good luck!
Slight server bloopage there, but we're back online again.
Greg redeemed himself by alerting me to the outage. Thanks Greg. :)
When I click on my comments section, over on the sidebar is an old bitmap that was on my old dotcom site. The url listed for that one is: http://www.gmroper.com/archives/elephanthandand%20flag-2.bmp. When I go to the "archives" for the old site (which really no longer exists, it was via an old host http://livingdot.com) I get a "bandwidth exceeded" message... interesting in that there is no more site to exceed!
I've looked at all the templates I currently have to see if I can dig out the missing picture and replace it with the one I have on my main page but I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Does anyone know how to get rid of a bitmap that doesn't seem to reside anywhere? LOL, I know it really is somewhere, I just don't know how to find it. Suggestions welcome... and thanks if you can tell me how to do it....

No job is too small, no budget too large.
Sorry about the hiccupage there. Just making a few database enhancements, and Movable Type didn't like a couple of them.
Fixed now.
update: With about three weeks to go, they still need some 1,000 more bloggers to reach the target. If you already have, thank you. If you haven't, go see what this is all about.
2996 is a project to have bloggers post a tribute to each person killed on 9/11. With just over a month to go, they need many more bloggers to sign up and help out.
Check that link and consider pitching in. Spread the word too.
Spent a few hours today whacking the comment system over the head with a large hammer.
The result will - I hope - be less spam. It will certainly help me to track how the spam is getting in. We've got three comment systems running now; two copies of Movable Type, and Minx. I know it's not Minx that's the main problem, so what I need to find out is which of the two copies of MT is having problems - or if there's something else that I've forgotten.
Anyway, any posts more than about a month old have now had comments closed, very very forcibly. There's nothing worse than looking up an old post to find twenty screenfuls of porn spam attached to it.
I still have to clean up the existing mess, but I've started on that, and I'm going to add some comment management tools to Minx that will also work on your MT comments.
Recently at Rocket Jones, I've been asked to review a couple of new podcasts, done in the style of old-time radio serials.
Check out the reviews and follow the links to the shows.

Fun stuff.
Okay, I've been noticing this today: my posts before Friday, Aug. 11 aren't showing up on my blog. When I go to look at my page, there's nothing there past last Friday!
Is it me? MuNu issues?
I just want to make sure I haven't fooked around and messed something up.

I've posted a new post, but it won't display. (The RSS feed has the new post, though.) Another, and perhaps related, problem is that I can't seem to reset my password on CPanel. When I go to the new site on Collosus I just get a time out. When I attempt to reset my password on the old CPanel I just get a new message to reset on Collosus.
Off Topic and not related to MU.NU stuff necessarily, but many of you know that I have been fighting lung cancer, and many of you don't. OK Guys and gals, beloved friends and casual acquaintences. I just got the CT scan results and
it says "NO EVIDENCE OF METASTATIC DISEASE" as well as
other medical jargon but the bottom line is that I've
won the battle and am on to winning the war against
this damned disease. And though it is not necessarily germain to this blog, it is in fact one of the reasons I was proposed for membership in this great group and am oh so very proud to be a munuvian.
Many of you have offered prayers and support and I'm very, very greatful.
Thanks, from the bottom of my heart.
I have an audio file I'd like to upload to my site, but the username and password I use for CPanel is, apparently, not the same as the CPanel username and password I need to use for FTP.
Can you help, Pixy or Jim? I'd like to upload the file but FTP won't let me/
Thanks!
If I wanted the maximum information about a comment posted to the blog, what do I do. I can run the IP address, of course. Do we have any logs that can be used to view more information?

GRRRR. The growling is from me. Help! (Twas not I in the MT Blacklist...)
Pixy,
Apparently this doesn't exist in Movable Type, but it would probably be useful to the sysadmin to be able to broadcast a message to all blogs simultaneously.
Maybe it could be saved as a draft post to each blog so it'll be seen when the blogger logs on or as an actual visible post that the blogger will have to physically delete, thereby garaunteeing that the person saw it.
Munuviana was supposed to serve this function, but obviously many Munuvians don't visit. Posting blacklist instructions here again and again doesn't help if the folks who need 'em never see 'em.

Horde hasn't worked for me for some time (which picked up gmroper@gmroper.mu.nu), I used to have gmroper@gmroper.com which I always used via Outlook. Nowadays, I've got gmroper@yahoo.com and gmroper@gmail.com. I'd like to go back to gmroper@gmroper.com or gmroper@gmroper.mu.nu can this be done without Horde? If so, how can I go about setting it up?
Sorry, but it's not done yet. I just tried to test under this comment:

I so love online credit card spammers. They're my all-time favorite.
Glad I'm not the only one broken. Good luck on the repairs Pix.
Is anyone else experiencing problems with their blog mail?
I'm not talking about a complete failure to work - it's more like.....some messages aren't getting through.
Am I going technically crazy or am I the only one 'seeing things'....?
(I'd contact Pixy about this......but I tried and cannot be sure the message got through to him.)
UPDATE: Okay, it's official: I am no longer getting any mail. I sent a test message from my home e-mail and it was returned.
Is anyone else having problems with their mail?
UPDATE II: Anyone there?? Hello? Am I talking to myself?!?!
I'm having a problem with comments similar to the one that Harvey reported the day before yesterday. Mine says this:
Invalid [] range "y-f" in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/0-apr-credit-card-a.blogspot.com|007.sh| 00rapredittedit.finance4u.us|010.allineare.com| 014.guerredellastella.com|015.ambrato.com| 01pgnz1w.itarezzo.info|021c.pitri.be| 03.bruciarsi.com|030.allineare.com|036d250d.com| 04.guerredellastella.com|04c94314.com| 069.imparilo.com|07.accettazione.com| 095.ambrato.com|09c4a6c0.com|0adult|0cartoon.com| 0casino|0catch.com|0creditcardtoday.com|0hentai| 0manga|0printing.com|0sesso|0sex-toons.com| 0sfondi-desktop.com|0sfon at extlib/jayallen/Blacklist.pm line 3098.
(I added breaks, of course.)
I attempted to post a comment in the Minx Comments post. However, I seem to be MT Blacklisted. I'll post my question below, but any help with the other problem would be appreciated.
Umm, huh? Do I change my Main Index or the Master Archive Index? And I save them as a different name? My current file names are index.html and archive.html. I do NOT see an index.php.Ehh, I created a brand spanking new template, file named page.entry containing the code above(CSS replaced with my own). Will that work?
Confused in Virginia.
Somebody broke our RSS feed. Personally, I blame the Llamas. Or the Joos. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Anyway, does any one know how to tweak an RSS feed so that:
a) it works
b) it's the full Monty (not just excerpts, but full)
?????
It's not a big deal, but I finally got around to logging on to CPanel, and when I tried to use the File Manager I got the following error message:
[a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]
And I also got the following message under my trashcan:
Unable to change directory to /kei/home/demphist/.trash! You do not seem to have access permissions! (System Error: Permission denied)
When Jim first set up my account he gave me a plethora of usernames and urls, all of which looked sort of similar to those I generally use, but with slight variations. He eventually set up my blog url to the right spelling, but left my CPanel login name as one of the variants. That's OK, and I'm used to using it now, but I wonder if these misspellings are at the root of the File Manager error problem, somehow?

I asked on the comments of a previous post, but where exactly is this "file manager" in the MT interface where I can view -- and manage -- my blog's files? Sorry if I seem obtuse but I really don't where this function is, but have seen others talk about using it.
At the request of the subject of one of our posts, we recently deleted a post from our blog database. But, while the post doesn't now appear in our Movable Type interface, nor in the monthly and category archives, it is still viewable by any sites that had directly linked to it, or by manually typing its direct URL.
The post in question is here: http://colossus.mu.nu/archives/186361.php
Is there a server cache that still may have the post in it or something? The person really wants this post deleted completely (and we don't have a problem doing so) so what needs to be done?
Thanks.
OK, maybe I haven't been paying attention but when did File Manager under CPanel stop working? I noticed that my favicon.ico file is under angrygwn.mu.nu/archives instead of the root directory angrygwn.mu.nu, and figured I should make it available in the root since that is where convention says it should be. I got to file manager, and I get an error related to not having permissions. Weird.
I keep getting this error, preventing my site from loading:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected '<' in /home/ace/public_html/skins/1/3c-body.php on line 46
I haven't changed the template. I was wondering if anyone else got it too, and how it should be fixed.
I checked that line of my template, and looked to make sure brackets occurred in pairs, but that's the limit of my source-warrior skills.
Seems okay to me.
Here's a quick rundown on how to create your own Minx-based comments pages.
First, you need to change your comments links from, well, whatever they are now, to:
<a href="http://minx.cc/?post=<$MTEntryID$>">Comments</a>Or something similar. http://minx.cc?post=XXXXXX is a link that works for any given entry to bring up that entry and its comments.
Well, it shouldn't work on unpublished entries. Let me check that...
Hmm. Well, that's not quite right. You can't see the post, but it gives you a comment form. I'll fix that.
...
Done.
Anyway, the template looks like this:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">Got all that?
<html><head>
<title>[posts][post.title][/posts] </title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://minx.cc/css/minx.css" type="text/css" />
<script language="JavaScript" src="http://minx.cc/scripts/showhide.js"></script>
</head><body>
<div id="container">
<div id="center">
<div class="content">[posts]<h1>[post.title]</h1><p>
[post.text]
<p>
[post.more]<p class="posted">
Posted by: [post.authorlink] at
<a href="[post.url]">[post.time]</a>
</p>
<p><h1>Comments</h1>
<p>
[comments:here]
<p>
[include commentform]
[/posts][magic.pager]
[magic.stats]</div>
</div>
</div><div style="clear: both;"> </div>
</body>
</html>
No?
Okay, let's take it a bit at a time.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">This tells the browser that the page is to be interpreted as XHTML. Whether it is valid XHTML or not depends on the template, but if you don't put this line in some funny things happen with the current stylesheet.
<html><head>The HTML head section.
<title>[posts][post.title][/posts] </title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://minx.cc/css/minx.css" type="text/css" />
<script language="JavaScript" src="http://minx.cc/scripts/showhide.js"></script>
</head>
The title line just puts the title of the post as the title on the browser window.
The next two lines pull in the CSS (stylesheet) - replace this with your own CSS; and the standard show/hide comments thingy.
Which this page doesn't actually use, so we might as well remove it.
Anyway:
<body>The start of the body of the page. The DIVs depend on your stylesheet; you should be able to get an idea of what to put here by looking at your existing comments page.<div id="container">
<div id="center">
<div class="content">
[posts]The start of the posts block. Post-related tags are only guaranteed to work inside a posts block.
<h1>[post.title]</h1><p>Display the title, nice and big.
[post.text]Display the post body, then a paragraph break, then the extended post (if there is any). If there isn't an extended post, your page should still look nice and tidy.
<p>
[post.more]
<p class="posted">Show that "Posted by" line.
Posted by: [post.authorlink] at
<a href="[post.url]">[post.time]</a>
</p>
<p><h1>Comments</h1>A line that says "Comments" in nice big letters.
<p>
[comments:here]Put the comments here. (Hey, this stuff is easy!)
[include commentform]Include the comment form.
[/posts]Don't forget to close whatever you opened!
[magic.pager]You only really need this if you are going for paged comments, which don't work right now anyway.
[magic.stats]Show performance statistics. You don't really need this at all... But it's cute.
</div>And close everything else. Yay!
</div>
</div><div style="clear: both;"> </div>
</body>
</html>
Easy, huh? All you need to do is save this as a new index template called page.entry... And wait for me to fix things so that Minx looks for the page.entry template instead of the mxEntry template. And viola!
I think I can stop spam dead by turning off the Movable Type comments and replacing them with the Minx comment system.
Two drawbacks:
1. Minx doesn't rebuild your blog, so the comment count won't update. This will get fixed soon; it already tracks which pages need to be rebuilt, it just doesn't actually do it.
2. Minx doesn't send you notification emails.
Oh, and:
3. Minx comments by default don't look like your blog. They look like, well this, for example. But you can edit the templates and change it to use your existing stylesheet.
Give me a day or two to tidy things up and post some instructions, and we should be able to kick this spam addiction for good.
The problem is, everyone needs to make the switch so that I can completely switch off MT comments completely, because MT comments leak (at least on our ancient version).
I should be able to do something to globally switch everyone over, which just leaves you to set up your own custom comment-page templates (which I can help with).
What do you think?
For whatever reason, I'm getting comment spam on something I posted way back in December. Please feel free to delete it.
I don't know why that particular post is getting spammed, but I guess it's happening to a lot of us.
Got no less than 380 spam comments between 7/28 and 7/31. I was away for the weekend and when I got back...egads!
For the time being I'm just shutting down comments on my site. I can't deal with it right now. Looking forward to Minx. Will keep an eye out to see how it's coming along.
