Bandwidth! Argh.

Not sure if the error message is due to the move or if I really have exceeded bandwidth (did receive a "heads up" message a short while back).

But just in case you don't get a notification. Would ya please? When you get a chance.

Moving Day

Update: I think it all worked, but due to the time taken - 18 hours for the main copy alone - and the need to test things, I'm going to put off the move until next weeked. The old servers are already paid for until the end of the month anyway, so I don't want to risk a screwup just to try to make it happen today instead of next Sunday.

But at least if the old servers suddenly explode, we have a full working copy of everything, ready to go.

Update: Okay, I've started copying stuff across. This takes a loooong time (12 or 15 hours), so what I'm doing is two passes - an initial copy, and then an update of anything that's changed while the copy was running. You can keep right on posting and commenting while the copy is going, up until the time comes for me to switch everything across.

More news as it happens! :)

Hi everyone.

We will be moving to new servers this Sunday, the 1st of October. I'm working to minimize the downtime, but there will be at least a couple of hours where people might get sent to the old servers instead of the new ones.

This should fix all of the problems we've been having lately. We've had some network glitches and hardware problems, but the main thing that's making life difficult is the mess created when I was trying to recover from the DDoS attacks back in June. I had to move everyone from one server to the other, and back again, and in some cases back to the other one. CPanel didn't like that a whole lot, which left us with problems with CPanel itself, email, and web statistics.

The easiest way to fix all this is just to get a new server with a not-messed-up copy of CPanel, and that's exactly what I've done.

The new servers are a bit faster, though not a lot, but they come with more bandwidth and a better network.

Once we are happy on the new servers, I'll open things up for new munus again. I haven't really added anyone since everything went kerplooie in June, so we have a bit of a waiting list.

On another note, we're planning to launch The New Site in late November. This is a commercial blogging-and-other-stuff site, using software I'm developing. The same software will be used to run mu.nu, eventually replacing Movable Type and Wordpress (and CPanel and Awstats and everything else).

You don't have to make the move to the new software right away; everyone will be able to choose if and when they are ready. And you'll have a lot of input into how it develops.

Regardless, mu.nu will remain independent. The new site will have ad-supported and paid options, but that doesn't mean anything to mu.nu. Your sites keep going just as before, but with shiny new software. I will be looking at creating a link between the sites to allow Munuvians and Newsiters to share stuff easily, as long as that doesn't put any restrictions on mu.nu.

I'm hoping to give each munuvian a bunch of invites to hand out for free "paid" accounts on the new site; I have to get that past the money peeps, but I think they'll go for it.

I have a couple more things to clean up first, but I start working full time on the new site from Wednesday of next week. That was supposed to happen in July, but I got run over by a bus. :(

MT mandatory security update

I came across references to this mandatory Moveable Type security patch. I'm not sure that affects us, but I thought it wise to broach the subject here.

Monthly Archives SNAFU

I don't normally look at my monthly archive pages. However, this morning I noticed that when you view any given monthly archive on my site, my sidebar is pushed all the way down to the bottom and the width is compressed.

I haven't made any changes to the format that I'm aware of. And any other view - main, individual post or category archive - looks normal. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

E-mailed comments

Today there have been numerous comments left on our blog; however, none were e-mailed to us as we had set up in our preferences (since day one). Checking our e-mail is how we read and respond to comments. It's important to us.

Has there been some tech hassle involved in this?

Eh?

The wife is down with the same message:

WordPress
Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

* Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
* Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
* Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

The other MuNu blogs, like this one, on the same server are up.

Awstats

For the last two weeks, or so, I get the following message when I click on the Awstats link in cPanel:

Error: Couldn't open config file "awstats.yourdomain.com.conf" nor "awstats.conf" after searching in path ".,/home/usadave/tmp/awstats/,/etc/opt/awstats,/etc/awstats,/etc,/usr/local/etc/awstats": No such file or directory

- Did you use the correct URL ?
Example: http://localhost/awstats/awstats.pl?config=mysite
Example: http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/awstats.pl?config=mysite
- Did you create your config file 'awstats.yourdomain.com.conf' ?
If not, you can run "./../../tools/awstats_configure.pl" from command line, or create it manually.

Check config file, permissions and AWStats documentation (in 'docs' directory).

In the past this has happened off and on, but usually only lasted a few hours or a day. Now it happens every time I try to look at my awstats.

Is any one else having this problem? Does anyone know how I can fix it? Or is the fix only possible if our generous and talented Pixy Misa does it?

Please help?

SactoDan Can't Publish

Pixy,

SactoDan emailed me and asked me to post a Help Sign. When he attempts to save a post, it goes to blank screen and says done. But does not publish the post.

Tiny, little bandwidth problem

I've never heard of WServerNews (formerly W2Knews) before, but they very nicely send a deluge of visitors to my site...and in particular to the pictures of planes landing at the old Kai Tak airport (not for the weak stomached).

Unfortunately that page is pretty heavy with pictures, so at times I've had "bandwidth exceeded" come up. Oh wise Pixy, please can you help?

Bum

Sorry about the outage. Yuri, one of the two... three... well, right now, six mu.nu servers, albeit the one that hosts most of the blogs, fell over. Haven't worked out why, just yet, but it's back up and running.

I have two happy, healthy, brand new servers waiting to take over, but I simply haven't had the time to move mu.nu across. I'm hoping that the thing that's been eating my brain the past couple of months will finally be finished on Monday and after that things will be a lot happier for everyone.

If not, I might just go mad instead.

We'll see.

Update: The brain-eater has been banished! :D I am back and munuing more than ever.

I need to plan the move to the new servers, and then we'll open things up to new munus again. At the same time, I'll be rolling out Minx so that people can start moving to it for real. (My blog is already running under Minx, and Ace is using Minx comments, but it doesn't do everything it needs to just yet.)

And then comes the new site, which will bring a ton of new goodies with it.

I was hoping that this would be ready about now, but the brain eater sucked two months out of my life, so it will be sometime in November before it's ready. We'll have a continuous stream of new goodies starting in early October. Cool stuff happening all over the place... As long as my brain doesn't get eaten again.

La la la...

Munuvitude

I attended a gathering of Milwaukee-area bloggers last night. the subject of my blog being hosted at mu.nu came up a couple of times. I reckon everyone here will be pleased to hear that the consensus was that mu.nu is cool, what Pixy is doing is cool, and I am fortunate to be a part of it. And also the pie.

You've Been Banned

I put an IP address on the blacklist, but I notice through SiteMeter that this person is still getting to my blog with the IP address I banned.

Did I do something wrong?

My apologies if this issue has already been discussed.

My Posts Disappeared

I just rebuilt my site, as suggested by Pixy, after noticing that my most recent post appeared twice even though it was only posted once. Now there are no posts showing on the main page. The list of recent entries seems to work, however. I'm not sure whether something happened to my template, or something is dysfunctional in the setup, or... you know, it's a "whoops".

A celebration of life

Dear Pixy and Munuvian friends:

I am currently getting ready for my "in memorium" post dedicated to my friends who died on 9/11 and need a bit of help. I have a song in mind that I'd like to dedicate to them. I haven't decided if I'll sing it myself (if I can unlump my throat long enough) or if I'll upload a portion of the song by the artist (so as not to infringe on copyright laws). Where I need help is in the following areas 3 areas:

1) I believe that I need to go through the c-panel to upload said song, but I'm not sure. If that's the case then:
a) I don't have a password, and
b) Although I'm not a tech guru I can usually get things done, but if somebody would be able to answer a few questions, in the event that I need a little guidance, well, I would really appreciate it.

I would truly be grateful for any direction I could receive.

Thanks!

My Blog Is Gone... Kinda

Help! I can get to a number of other Munuvians, but my blog addy brings up a page that says:

technicalities.mu.nu is registered and maintained by one of our customers.

Oops!

File Manager (cPanel)

I am having a problem accessing File Manager in cPanel. I get this error message whenever I try it:

"[a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]"

I'm trying to get into the file manager in order to deal with this problem:

"The account with the username 'usadave', is running out of disk space.
Please remove some files from this account, or ask the administrator to increase your disk quota.
You have currently used 82.63% of your disk space. "
(I received this in an email last month.)

I have also experienced a problem that may be related to all of the above: I tried to verify the existence of two pictures I thought I uploaded through MT (not file manager) that currently will not display when I try to preview them (though I received no error messages when I uploaded them). So I'm wondering if I'm out of disk space, but I cannot tell without getting into File Manager. Whew! Full circle.

Can someone give me a little help?

Does MT2.6 (or this specific installation at MuNu) have the ability to allow readers to provide an email address in order to receive notifications of comments added to specific posts on a blog?

Update Questions

Just curious and wondering if we could get an update on a few things:

1. Trackbacks
2. Trickle
3. New Blogging System

I had understood (perhaps incorrectly) that #1 and #2 would be fixed with #3. If so, what's the status on #3? Is the new system going to be rolled out and live to anyone who wants it (or is it already)? I remember something about some free accounts and some paid, too.

And if it's going to be awhile before the new system is going to be opened, will #1 or #2 be fixed on the current system, or should we just wait for the new one?

Thanks for all that you do, Pixy!
