Missing Comments

I've noticed on my blog that the comment counter is going up on my latest post, and if I log in to my MT menu then I see there are comments there. But if I click on the comment counter on my actual blog, then those comments aren't there.

Is there a comments monster in my blog?

Remembering Info in Comments

For some reason my blog doesn't remember user info for frequent commenters (me--which is annoying). Even when "Yes" is chosen and cookies are enabled. Any suggestions?

Also, I notice that when my comments page opens up, frequently the text is blank until I scroll up and down a few times. Possibly a problem on my end, but maybe others have experienced this.

UPDATE: Most of the comments tended to think this was a user-end problem. I don't. The reason is that the problem persists across a number of internet surfing platforms. For instance, it doesn't seem to matter wheter one is using IE, Netscape, or Mozilla. I'm thinking that there is a problem in our comments template with whatever code sends cookies since it seems to affect so many of us.

This is a job for Madfish Willlie!

I seem to remember a fraud alert which said that these e-mails are fraudulant. I did not hit the link, but I did go to the regular ebay login, and found no notices.

What do you guys think?

Trackbacks to site not working

I posted an entry on my site which linked to this one over at Moxie.

No trackback listed, though her sidebar lists my site as being recently updated. This is common when linking to her. Any idea why she doesn't see my trackbacks?

Apologies

As you may know, all of Munuvania is currently being censored by the South Korean government (check out Big Hominid for the latest on government censorship - he also got tagged in a Newsweek article). It just dawned on me that the ban on the mu.nu domain is probably a direct result of my posting the video of the South Korean hostage being beheaded.

As someone who's a brand new arrival in mu.nu, I feel like quite the ass for getting all of all y'all banned in an entire country.

So please accept my abject apologies for this turn of events.

Closing comments

Pixy/Madfish:

I've seen a few places mention some MT plugin that allows you to close off comments after a certain amount of time. Given 99% of the spam that beats the Blacklist comes from old comments, is it possible to install this in the Central Munu Computer DooHickey?

MU.NU Banned in Korea

No, this is not a joke. I wish it were.

The government of South Korea took humbrage at the many links to video of Kim Sun-il being beheaded (disclosure note: I was one back in my blahsplat days). In order to 'protect the family' of the victim, they took the drastic step of blocking all internet access, by browsers in Korea, to any DOMAIN with any links to the video. So, all URL's that end in blogspot.com are blocked. Browsers in Korea have been using proxies to view blogs they like, but that's a pain.

A friend of mine in Korea, Kevin (aka, Big Hominid), e-mailed me yesterday and told me that he couldn't see some pics on my site because he had to view it through a proxy as well. When I told him about my move to mu.nu this is what he wrote:

Damn, then you're banned here, along with the rest of your unruly tribe [ie, munivians]. You just can't win against the g*dd*mn Korean government.
Apparently, any one with an mu.nu extension is also banned.

Are there any munivians in Korea that can confirm this?

Code Help?

Does anyone have the code to insert into the template for emails? You know- "Email me" and if the person clicks on it, it opens an email with my email address?

Thanks!

Sitemeter question

I love the C-Panel site stats, but still mostly use Site Meter for a quick summary. I've been trying to add Site Meter to my archive pages, but not sure where to install the code. I've tried various places in the archive template to no avail.

Since Site Meter will only count hits to your main page if it is not installed in the archive template, I thought this might be something others would be interested in learning how to fix.

Help us Madfish Willie...you're our only hope.

Blogrolling & Liberals

First, liberals: I have been wanting to post something about this for a while, and based on a recent post, I’m kind of excited to do so now.

I went through all of the mu.nu blogs recently only to realize that I was likely the only democrat/liberal (those two are not always connected, but I’m using them that way for the sake of argument). Then, I saw this comment on this post:

Wait a minute. I thought *I* was the token liberal.
Posted by: Jennifer at July 22, 2004 07:49 PM
I’ve always been curious how many of us there were, if any. Honestly, like Jen, I thought I was the only one. I don’t want to stir up a political debate, but I am curious if anyone else here leans left…you know, voting for Kerry/Edwards?

*ducking*

On to the Blogrolling thing: I would have posted a question asking if anyone had the OPML code to import to Blogrolling, but I’ve actually enjoyed perusing the Munuvian sites. I’m switching the mu.nu roll over to Blogrolling so that recently updated sites can be flagged. I really like that feature with Blogrolling and find it to be useful so that I’m not visiting sites that haven’t been updated in a few days. I’m not quite done adding everyone (my, there are a lot of you), but I think it’s going to work out really well to showcase blogs that update frequently. I think I can share the OPML if anyone has Blogrolling Gold and wants to import the code into their own blogroll.

The only issue I’m going to have with this is that I won’t know who the new Munuvians are. Other than adding them to the mu.nu blogroll and their occasional hello here, is there any way to know when they come on board? I’m fairly new here, so don’t shoot me if this seems like a stupid question.

I think that’s about it for now. Hope you’re all doing well. :)

MuNews

I extended the "Recent Posts" section to 120 entries. That's still less than a days' worth, but provides a reasonable selection of new stuff. And, of course, counts as links on the Ecosystem. ;)

Paper doing blogging story

I just got an e-mail from the paper in Harrisburg, and they are going to do a story on blogging.

They asked if they can feature me in their story. I said yes, but I guess people are going to find out about me. I wonder how people like my boss will react if they read my stuff.

I guess we'll see.

Blogger Bowl Update: 3 Spots Left!

Blogger Bowl is rolling along, now with 7 teams:

Snooze Button Dreams
Rocket Jones
annika's journal
Patriot Paradox
Vehement Spittle (Anyone have any idea what blog this is? I'm trying to guess!)
King of Fools (Fire Ants)
ChristWeb (Highlanders)

We need three more teams. I'm calling out Madfish, and Harvey. They talk tough, but we all know they crumble in competition.

Once again to join is easy:

Go here and use the following to join the league. You will need a Yahoo ID to join, by the way:

League ID# is 171767
Password is paradox

For the team name please use your blog name and be sure to leave a message here or on the message board there to confirm you joined. Commenters to blogs are also welcome too, just be sure to let me know.

I finished moving all the archives over for Both Hands today (tried to save you some work, Pixy). You're all welcome to come visit!

I love the MT style--so clean and pretty, and I love my template, except for one thing...the archives are not so nice. If anyone can give me some help tweaking my master archive index so it looks like my main index, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sara Sara

I was reminded of this drinking song that any woman named Sarah will no doubt be annoyed if you point it out. We used to sing this at The Phyrst, in State College.

"Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a Chevrolet. All day long she sits and shifts. All day long she shifts and sits. Sara, Sara, sitting in a Chevrolet."

"Sarah, Sarah, sipping on a bottle of Schlitz. All day long she sips her Schlitz. All day long her Schlitz she sips. Sara, Sara, sipping on a bottle of Schlitz."

"Sarah, Sarah, working in a sheet slitting plant. All day long she slits those sheets. All day long those sheets she slits. Sarah, Sarah, working in a sheet slitting plant."

Blogger Bowl 2004?

UPDATE: Make that an autodraft. A lot of emails telling me live draft is too much so, I am all if not flexible!

Every year for the past 4 or 5 years I have played Yahoo Fantasy Football with friends from work, and some online. This year is no exception, except this year I am hoping to perhaps call out a few bloggers for some fun and competition. I am hoping to get a league together with a maximum of 10 teams, and no less then 8 teams. I've found this size of a league to be most fun, and playable.

To join is simple:

Go here and use the following to join the league. You will need a Yahoo ID to join, by the way:

League ID# is 171767
Password is paradox

For the team name please use your blog name and be sure to leave a message on my blog or on the message board there to confirm you joined. Commenters to this blog are welcome too, just be sure to let me know.

So far we have 3 teams, and are looking to have a autodraft to pick teams. If you have any questions let me know.

Help Wanted

I need help. I've been trying to upload a movie to my site. I was getting file too big errors so i set out to make a smaller version of the file. then I got one small enough to upload and not look like complete crap and it wont play. This is my first ever Flash effort and although I figured out the basics of how to do what I want, getting it out for the rest of you to laugh at and ridicule see is proving a challenge. Did I mention I don't have manuals and the online help really sucks?

Anyway, here is the link for the file I was able to upload.

download file

In the mean time, I'll keep trying.

UPDATE: Nick was kind enough to grant me temporary access to load the bigger file onto a server of his. He also helped me to figure out how to FTP to my site on our server. The problem is two people have already commented that they cannot play the .mov file so I FTP's a few other formats to nomayo.mu.nu. I can see the files, and even download them, the problem is, I don't seem to be able to link to them. Here's the html I think should work but doesn't:

<a href="http://nomayo.mu.nu//waffle.avi">link</a>

Is it me? or is the whole internet confused?

Prunalicious

I cleared out the activity log. It was getting kind of big - 13MB and then some.

Oh, and in the past two months, MT Blacklist has blocked over 14,000 spam comments. If you think spammers are annoying now, imagine life without MT Blacklist.

But thanks to Jay Allen's hard work, there will now be a version of MT Blacklist for MT 3.0. Hooray!

Finally Stopping By to Say Hi!

I've been so busy the last few days, I'm cross-eyed. But here I am! I've finally made it over to say Hello and to thank you all for inviting me to join you.

I still have to read up on the Useful Thingies and get my archives imported, but regardless of how fast that goes, I will start regular posting on my MuNu home, Monday.

All in all, it looks like a truly excellent place to blog! I have my spiffy new site, cool banners, it's very exciting!

CPanel and Webmail

This CPanel thing is so cool and so compelling, I fear for my job based on the sudden blow my productivity at work has taken. Frankly, I actually understand very little of it. One thing I was curious about, though, was webmail and I thought I'd throw some questions out to the community as a whole because it might be useful for others and I found nothing on point in the archives. I hope these questions are not too basic.

When I click on "webmail", I am offered the choice between: Neomail; Horde; and, Squirrel Mail. How does one choose between the three? Does anyone have any particular recommendations to make?

Also, is webmail something you find useful or desirable? Is it duplicative of, say, Gmail or any other web based email service?

Thanks in advance!

Bug Fix For Those Exporting Entries From MT 3.0 to MT 2.64

I finally got feedback on the import issue I was having importing entries from Movable Type 3.0 to Movable Type 2.64. Here is a link and here is the text for quick reference:

At line 432 in lib/MT/ImportExport.pm:
## Make sure dates are in English. $blog->language('english');

I believe this an incorrect specification of the language, which is used to figure out how AM/PM needs to be output. Since 'english' isn't a valid language code, MT outputs nothing for the %p (AM/PM) format code.

I've tested the following change on my weblog, and it now includes the AM/PM in an export file:

## Make sure dates are in English. $blog->language('en');

Hope this helps!

Buses Considered Harmful

The lovely and talented LeeAnn links to a blog that recently got unceremoniously dumped from its host, Greeblie. I don't know that much about Greeblie, but as far as I know it was a blogging community like MuNu. Now it seems to be gone.

Which raises the question of what if something happened to me? If, for whatever reason, I couldn't attend to MuNu for an extended period, there's currently no backup Pixy in place. I'd like to do something about that; just because I get run over by a bus is no reason for MuNu to get run over as well.

I fully intend to keep MuNu not just running but growing for the next fifty years at a minimum, but buses do happen and we have to take precautions. The two critical things are the master MuNu password, and the monthly payment for the server. The first I will entrust to a couple of Munuvians. For the second, I'll probably set up a PayPal account so that people can contribute towards the running costs should that become necessary. Any other thoughts?

Yay! Both Hands is up and running. Thanks Pixy! The new digs are swell!

Welcome All MuNubys

Welcome to all our nu MuNuvians!

In the sidebar is a section labeled Useful Thingies.

There are several sections that link to all kinds of useful information you'll need to make your transistion smoother. Make sure to read all the comments too as there are more links and updated code samples.

The first section is links to MT User Manuals and the Support Forum.

The second section is links to different types of MuNu blogrolls and instructions on how to implement them in your sidebar.

The third section covers template and stylesheet samples and assistance. The templates are a good place to start if you are trying to figure out what all the templates do and where they are. It will be a bit confusing at first, especially for blog*spot users who are used to one index/stylesheet. Just poke around and you'll figure it out. The color links are pretty cool for helping with your stylesheets.

The fourth section is for Mozilla related tips.

The fifth section links to code samples and installation instructions for different s and doodads (valid MuNu tech-speak) you can include in your templates for improving your reader experience.

The last section is some weird stuff. Make sure you read it.

You can also get help to your questions by using the search feature. This search will search the whole MuNuvian blogroll for the term in the search box. So, you'll get a bunch of hits for whatever you want to know.

If you have any questions regarding coding and formatting, just post here at MuNuviana and you'll get more opinions and assistance than you care for - one thing MuNuviana doesn't lack is opinions!

If you have any bloggers that you think would fit in with the group, post your nomination over at Ellis Island and we'll go over to read your nomination and Yay/Nay.

Hey all, this is Howard of 3leggeddog. I just wanted to say Thanks for making me a Munuvian. I feel like one of the cool kids, now. The dogs were so excited to be here that they've already logged in and tried to post. Fortunately, they don't type quickly with one front paw, so I was able to stop them before they said something that would embarass me.

Thanks to Alex and Pixy for getting me here.

It's Mad Mikey and I'm here at the persistance of Stevie at CaughtintheXfire and of course, Pixy.

I am very much a random, sometimes even scattered, thinker. Hence, Random Penseur. I am, at your kind invitation, one of the new bloggers joining this merry band. I will, when I recover from my befuddlement caused by the amazing amount of options presented, be found at Random Pensees.mu.nu. In the meantime, my blog sits at Blogspot. Thank you, Pixie, for the very cool opportunity to join such an interesting and talented community. And thank you, Helen, for your nomination!

With apologies to the Rolling Stones for the title of this post. I just can't get that song out of my head this morning. Still, better than Barney.

There are now 111 blogs set up in the MuNu MT database. This includes the various laboratories, but discludes Xset.

Oh, and 150 bloggers. Some of whom don't exist, but still.

Hmm. 94 blogs on the 'roll. Need 6 more!

Update: Emails sent to Mad Mikey, 3leggeddog, Mrs Frinklin and Random Penseur. If someone could forward me Teresa of Technicalities' address, I'll send the welcome wagon round her place as well. Which leaves... Lynn. Right. Darn, I don't have Lynn's address either. Helllllp!

Small Delay

Hi all. I've got a whole bunch of blogs set up (and one or two more to go), and I just need to check that the logins work and send out the welcome emails. Unfortunately, my Windows PC blew up and I've spent the past couple of hours fixing that instead of doing the other. And now it's 2:15 am.

Of course, I spent most of the day watching silly anime, but I blame it all on Microsoft anyway. But people waiting on new blogs should hear from me in the next 24 hours, and after that I'll get back to people wanting to import entries from their old blogs. (Hi Linda!) And then I need to do some work on the MuNu forums, and then on the MuNu home page, and then...

Speaking of the MuNu home page, I'd like to make it a group blog.* Not a blog for the group, the way Munuviana is, but a blog by the group. Probably it would lean towards the more serious/analytical/newsworthy stuff, but interleaved with cheesy humour. And I think the best format would be short excerpts and links back to the individual MuNu blogs. So it would be a sort of rolling Carnival of the Munuvians. What thinkest thou?

* Because I sure ain't doing much with it...

Can This Be Done???

I was curious if there were such things as Subdomains within the greatness that is Munuviana.

I had wanted to build a little blog for the nine yr old as a means for her to improve her writing skills during what is left of the summer, and M-blog just isn't as friendly as I'd like it to be. I would have so much more parental control if I could set her up as a little corner of my own world. And with the nonsense you see on the web and in the non-virtual world today, that's something I have to take pretty seriously.

Shoot, I even have a banner all built for her.

Is this even possible?

Already Needing Help!

Hello,

I need help from someone a little more knowledgable on importing files to Movable Type from a previous Movable Type blog. I exported the file, saved it as a text file and uploaded it to a directory called import. Went to import in MT and all I get is this:

Importing entries into blog 'Patriot Paradox'
Importing entries as author 'Nick Queen'

All data imported successfully! Make sure that you remove
the files that you imported from the 'import' folder, so that
if/when you run the import process again, those files will not
be re-imported.

Is it just me?

Hello Munuvians

Uh hello! Just an intro for a new blog on the block, my blog Patriot Paradox!

Pixy just sent me an invite email and said to come by and say hello so that's what I'm going to do. As a person who has been in contact in one way or another with Munuvians since I started my blog almost a year ago I have seen many new people join the ranks here, and Mu.nu has grown into probably the best blogging community on the web, if not the only blogging community. I'm delighted to get to join.

I guess thanks are in order to Jim who endured an email every now and then from me asking when I'd get to join while my last blog sank slowly. First I started getting Internal Server Errors and then one down time after another, and then the last straw was the loss of my PHP about a week and a half to two weeks ago. Pixy came in and saved the day right in time! So hooray for him and thanks too!

Lastly I want to say thanks to Harvey who posted about my plight around a month and a half ago after my site got way too popular and went belly up. His post got the ball rolling and Jim helped me in. So thanks Harvey! Also Susie and Madfish, and Blather Review for voting to give me a green card!

Last, but not least I noticed most like some sort of poetry here:

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where they're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Is it raining, is it snowing
Is a hurricane a-blowing?

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
ANY SIGNS THAT THEY ARE SLOWING!

Extra points if anyone knows what movie this is from.

and a present for Munuvians! A Munuvian OPML so you can add everyone that is currently in Mu.nu to your news aggregator (hopefully this is something needed if not just ignore) Just download it, and import it to your aggregator! Thanks for having me, and I hope to get to know everyone very well!

Consent of the Governed

I haven't been posting to Consent of the Governed like I should. I moved and got a new job, yada yada yada.

I'd like to see that blog bet up and running better, and on a more consistent basis.

I just posted a new article there. Check it out.

Lightning strikes twice

If even he's checking it out again, so should you. I'm looking for feedback on turning the showcase into a link-based contest. Let me know...

Is This Thing On?

Fellow Munuvians, I posted this over at Ellis Island a couple of days ago - traffic there has been slow, I guess. I'll repost here.

Hello All,

I just wanted to offer a site for absorption! It's my friend, Howard, from 3 Legged Dog. You can find him here . He's a good friend of mine, and I think he would make an excellent addition to the mu nu family. He is helpful, warm, caring, and easy to get along with. He would also give you the shirt off his back. AND! AND! He has a damn good sense of humor. I think this is a great quality - there can never be too much of it. Please, check him out and let me know, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT, if he could be part of this, too! And I promise not to squeeze any more commas into one sentence. Spank you veddy much.

Thanks for your time! Have a great day/evening!

Cross that off my new year resolutions list

Thanks to everyone for their support of the Showcase. If you haven't had a chance yet, please give it a look and even a plug on your site. There's been some great entries already.

I mean everybody is looking at it these days...

I'm here...sort of

Let the trumpets ring, Rusty Shackleford has joined the ranks of the great and has made the mu.nu move!!!! Sort of. Thanks to all who helped make the move possible and to Pixy for getting things set up.

Unfortunately Blogger has made a few changes since the IMPORTING YOUR ENTRIES manual was written. This means complete 'tards like me are having a difficult time making the ol' switcheroonie.

1) The dark forces over at that unnamed wholly owned subsidiary of Google no longer specify the path to your Blog Filename, so I'm not sure how to save that for later importation into MT. Also, what should said file be saved as? (text?)

2) To where should I FTP said file once I have it saved? Is there a way to create subdirectories myself? Is there some administrative access that I'm not sure how to get at?

I appreciate any help y'all can give.

Remember Personal Info?

Alright. I'm a bit confused about this. When I first came to mu.nu, my information would never be saved on the pop up version of comments, despite the fact that I checked the little box. At some point, it started doing it, and I wish to God I had remembered what I did for that to happen. Why? Well, because I recently did some computer maintenance, like deleting my cache and cookies, defrag, etc., and now it doesn't remember my info again. Can anyone tell me what I should do that it works again?

Oh, oddly, it works with other blogs, but every mu.nu site that has comments pop-up...NO DICE. Weird.

Help. I'm lazy and hate entering my info every time I want to post a comment. :)
